Data Catalog

Dataset: US Census Designated Places (CDP)

Description

The US Census Designated Places (CDP) dataset is a boundary file with all census designated places in the United States. Each place is assigned a five-digit Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) code in alphabetical order within each state. This data and all associated attribute tables can be found in the Census Demographics and Boundaries dataset.

Collection Methodology

Census designated places (CDPs) are created at each decennial census as the statistical counterparts of incorporated places in order to provide data for settled concentrations of population that are not legally incorporated. The CDP boundary data is generated by TIGER. The boundaries usually are defined in cooperation with local or tribal officials but have no legal status. CDP boundaries may change from one decennial census to the next, therefore a CDP with the same name as in an earlier census does not necessarily have the same boundary.
